Easton Opal

from Providence by Galen Clark

/

lyrics

He looked so deep into that pocket watch
Time itself was standing still
How he missed the voices down the block
His solitude sold to theft and thrill
The old man poured himself another scotch
Thumbed the engraving on the back plate
Easton Opal burdened him at a cost
Of a death defying fate

With age old hands he gave the screws a twist
Revealing more than cogs and gears
Reluctantly he thought of what to wish
And how he lived long past his years
Hypnotized like a flame unto a wick
He realized his dormant fears
Captivated in a ticking myth
Outliving all he once held dear

Pleading time to never chime again
Deciphering if it all was real
He wished to break the watch without refrain to
Mundane moments bereft of zeal
Repeating remedies in reverse
He longed to sleep and dream again
Concluding Opals pocket watch was cursed
Longing for some finite end

So he struck the watch with all his strength
Mechanisms scattered wide
For a second he let his mind go blank
Yet he felt no change inside
In depths of silence as his heart sank
He cheated death with every stride
Ironically he thought of whom to thank
To never see the day he died
